How I Rebuilt a 2000s-Era App for Remote Work
Not long ago, I worked with a small business that was still using a desktop database built in the early 2000s. It had served them well, but it only worked on a single computer in the office. That was becoming a major problem as the team started working more from home and other locations.
They’d clearly outgrown the system, but didn’t know where to begin.
Understanding the Challenge
The app was built in MS Access and had been slowly adapted over the years. It was fragile, slow, and lacked any remote capability. Only one person could use it at a time, and there was no reliable backup. If that PC failed, the entire system would be at risk.
What they needed was a modern version of the same system. Something secure, easy to use, and accessible from anywhere.
What I Delivered
I rebuilt the platform using ASP.NET Core with a secure SQL Server backend. The layout was streamlined and made user-friendly, so there was no need to dig through tabs or pop-ups.
The new version:
-
Works from any device with a browser
-
Supports multiple users with login access
-
Creates real-time reports with no Excel exports
-
Is backed up and future-proofed
The Result
Now their team can log in from wherever they are. Whether they’re working from home, onsite, or travelling, everything they need is just a few clicks away. No more emailing files or relying on one person to manage everything.
Most importantly, the move was smooth and didn’t interrupt their day-to-day operations.
